Basically, you'll want to look at the same things you look at on any tractor. Look for major leaks (small areas of dust collecting are common and not to be worried about). Check the operation of the shifter, hitch, steering and so forth. Make sure the clutch feels good and doesn't slip - check for proper adjustment. See if the seller has any service records or invoices of repairs that may have been done. Check PTO operation - both engagement and the brake for proper operation. Check the condition and level of the coolant and lubricants. Listen for any abnormal noises while the engine is running, while driving with the clutch engaged, and while coasting with the clutch disengaged. Check the operation of the brakes. Check the operation of the differential lock (if equipped) by engaging it and turning the steering wheel both directions. The tractor should keep going in a fairly straight line. Later tractors with the side console generally bring more money. Some people don't think they're worth the extra money, but I happen to think they are. Besides the fact that these tractors are newer, the controls are much handier right there at your side than on the dash. If the tractor is a wide front, check for play at the tie rods, tie rod ends, and spindles. Check for leakage at the steering motor and the hydraulic pump. Check the condition of the belts, water pump and hydraulic pump coupler if you can. If possible, check the condition of the front axle pivot pins and maybe check the final drives for looseness. Make sure the radiator and oil cooler aren't plugged. If it was me, I wouldn't be above having the seller remove the hood and side panels to get a better look to see if there are problem areas that otherwise wouldn't be seen. If the seller doesn't want to do that, I would pass, as it takes about a whole ten minutes to remove the hood. Also, try to get the tractor on a dyno. Check the horsepower and also listen for noises. Check the amount of blowby coming out of the breather tube. A small amount of vapor is normal, a large cloud and oil running out is not. These are some of the basic things I would look at when looking to buy a New Generation tractor.
