Anybody have an esay solution for correcting a wobbly flywheel on an H, or have a good method for putting it on so it doesn't wobble? The splines seem OK and it clamps down tight.

My H flywheel wobbled for years from the day I got it running. Had to do a rebuild when started to use lots of oil. Replaced crank and used old flywheel. Wobble gone.

When I got my B the flywheel wobbled badly. I bought it with the idea that the crankshaft was bent, but a dial indicator on the center drilled hole in the crankshaft showed no runout. I replaced the flywheel, and no more problem. I did take my indicator with me to the salvage yard and check the new flywheel on the tractor before I took it off to be sure it was good. Even though the old one wobbled really bad, maybe close to 1/8" a the rim, it never vibrated and fit tight on the splines. I have no idea what caused the wobble but I have hard time beleiving Deere put it out the door that way. Try a different flywheel. Good luck, Paul

Leon, How much wobble are we talking? Put a dial indicator on it and post the readings. I have 2Hs and both have a slight wobble. Both have new main bearings and tight flywheels. I doubt you'll find one that doesn't have a little wobble. HMan

I measure about 0.050 in. total runout. It sure looks like more than that when she's running!

Leon, not sure there is much you can do about it. ~Is the crankshaft turning true? [does the flywheel end look like it has runout?].
~If the crank is running true you could install a new flywheel [an "H" flywheel isn't very expensive unless it is the 39 narrow flywheel].
~If the crank is bent [not uncommon from years of use] you will probably have to live with it. You could even have worn engine bearings allowing the crank to oscillate under firing pulses.
~You can try a re-torque, & tightening one then the other first but I doubt you will see an improvement.

I just installed a new main bearing and there is no looseness there. There is no runout. The pilot point in the center of the crank stays put when running and the outer periphery of the wheel runs true with no runout. Thus, I don't think the crank is bent. Do you suppose one could have success in putting a norrow shim under a "tooth" on the spline at just the right place? Maybe it could be kept tight.

Leon, while the "H" is no hard firing diesel, using shims between the crank & flywheel is risky. The flywheel needs as much spline contact as possible & using shims will reduce the contact area & if the flywheel comes loose in use you risk tearing the crank splines up. There is also the chance you will crack the flywheel due to uneven stress while tightening.
