i was out at my aunt and uncles place yesterday and i got my grandpas old G running after bout 2 1/2 years of sitting and when i pulled the plug out on the #1 cylinder it had antifreeze on it. im guessing its the head gasket as it started easy after we got it running the first time. what i was wondering was if anypone could tell me how long and what i would need to replace when taking the head off and if i would need any special toos, or i should leave it till i do a full motor rebuild?
thanks in advance.

You should not run the tractor until the problem is fixed, as antifreeze will really do a number on your engine bearings. I would recommend pulling the head - you should be able to determine whether the gasket is at fault once removed, and at the least magnaflux & pressure-check the head & perform whatever valve work is necessary before re-installation. One thing to remember is that gaskets (like nearly everything) are more expensive for the "G" than the other letter series. If you have a mind (and the means) to do a complete overhaul, it'll save you at least the price of the expensive head gasket & once it's buttoned up, you can leave it alone for good. Remember to pressure check / magnaflux the block as well

i checked the oil and there was not any antifreeze in it. im guessing its the head gasket, could it possibly be one of the valve guides?

I tend to agree with you that it may be the head gasket seeping a little bit. My 60 does this when sitting for a prolonged period of time. Some coolant will seep into one of the cylinders. When it starts, it blows the antifreeze out, misses for a little while on that cylinder, then it clears out and runs fine. If you have no antifreeze in your oil, the rings are probably keeping it from seeping into the crankcase. You could try a good cooling system sealer. You might also try heating the engine up good and re-torquing the cylinder head to specs - it might just seal it up. These fixes are obviously band-aid fixes, but they may get you by until you have the time to fix it correctly. When you do decide to check it out, make sure the head and block surfaces are flat. And you'll also want to make sure the head and block are crack free, just as was posted before.
