First of all, I don't know exactly what equipment classic green was intended for, and I'm not going to pretend to know, either. That said, my personal preference is for ag green on two-cylinders, as I have seen them painted both ways. The bottom line is that you can paint it whatever color you want, as it's your tractor. Ag green, classic green, Oliver green or pink with purple polka dots - it's your tractor, do with it what you will. For every person that prefers ag green, you'll probably find someone that prefers classic. You will never please anyone, nor should you try, as long as you're writing the checks. My two cents.

Read an article in a past issue of "GM" by Greg Stephen that covers this issue (about a year ago). He states that classic green was a color that was used on lawn and garden equipment in the 1980's. John Deere only added the two-cylinder to the can to assist in the marketing of the paint. It is not the correct color for two cylinder tractors

I went and got a can of classic green spray paint out of my shop to read what it says. Quote:
"Touch-up paint intended only for antique John Deere agricultural equipment"
Does that sound like it's meant for a lawnmower?

I guess that depends on what JD considers to be an antique. And if it's touch-up paint, maybe it's only intended for spot painting to match faded agricultural green, rather than painting complete units.

This was on a spray can. The quarts and gallons might read different. You work at a dealership, please look at one and let us know.
Thanks Frank M.

Frank, the quarts and gallons say "Intended only for antique John Deere agricultural equipment", so I guess the spray cans are only intended for touch-up, rather than actually painting large areas with. But, there is still no verification of what JD actually considers to be "antique" equipment. I would imagine that the old 100 series lawn mowers would be considered antiques, but who knows. I guess this paint question falls into the same category with straight pipes, electronic ignitions and everything else contraversial - just a matter of personal choice.

Thanks for checking on it. I agree with you. There's no law that forces one to paint their tractor with any certain paint. The lyrics to an old song come to mind. "You can't please everyone but you got to please yourself."

The classic green is the older 2-cyl. era green and is a paler shade of green than the current ag green which would be correct for your 1020

John Deere Green ( ag green)would be correct. Classic green was a color that showed up in about the early 1980's on things like 4650 tractors and 8820 combines, look at some of Deere's later advertizing where they refer to to 20 series titan combines as classic combines, maybe Deere does'nt think of their older tractors ect. as classic. That is where the name Classic Green must come from. Classic green should be used on 1980's era equipment.

No, classic green doesn't go on tractors made in the 80's. It goes on the two cylinder tractors and maybe thats why there is a two cylinder tractor on the can..... .. if you like the newer ag green then use whatever you want. I really can't tell the difference anyway

Uh, regarding "Classic" Green paint, NO, it doesn't go on 1980s vintage equipment. "CLASSIC GREEN" is the color intended for TWO CYLINDER tractors and equipment made prior to 1960.

A John Deere model "730" tractor is painted with "CLASSIC" green, and a 1961 4010 is painted with "AG" Green. There is/was also "LAWN EQUIPMENT" Green which is what your 318 or 110 or SX38 lawn tractor should be painted.
