In restoring my 420 W, I have been through most of the tractor with exception of the transmission parts and very happy with the results. Thanks to all of you here on this board. The one thing that I just do not like is the transmission noise. If it were a whining noise, I could live with it but its a clunking noise. It occurs from the transmission when both going down a grade (always) and idling in nuetral(sometimes. Because the noise is not consistant while idling, is it possible that its a bearing. I know very little about tranmissions and would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. How serious is this and whats envolved in properly diagnosing the cause. I do have all the manuals. Can I determine the problem fron the top of the transmission cover or will I need to split the tractor. As always, your help is greatly appreciated....Thks, Russ

Russ

If that noise is occuring while the tractor is in motion and not sitting still, I have one quick check to recommend. Pull the cover plate just above the pto shaft. Jack up one wheel, shine a flash light in the hole and watch the ring gear while rotating the wheel and look for teeth missins or partially missing on the ring gear. Mine only had 11 broken before it started clanking like a little guy in there with a 1/2 lb hammer striking the center case of the tranny. Hope you find a majic simple fix. Please let us know what it turned out to be.

Russ, it is common for the 40 thru 430 to have some gear noise when moving in any gear, I have been all through them and replaced every bearing and race, and still have the gear noise, so this evidently is just 40 odd years of wear on the gears themselves. But if you are having a severe noise while in nuetral, this sounds as if it can be fixed. To determine if it is in the trans. depress the clutch pedal, if the noise stops, this means it is in the trans. more than likely something on the input shaft, bad bearings or problems with the shaft. Also there are shims to adjust the preload on the bearings.I doubt if you can tell much by just looking in the top of the trans. unless it is something real obvious. Also making the noise downhill, sounds like one of the shafts moving forward due to missing shims, bad bearing or nut backed off. In order to inspect all the bearings, shafts, seals, ring & pinion, ect. you will have to break it into and remove the final drives. This is not that bad of a job, if you have access to a cherry picker type engine hoist or overhead hoist or come a long. If you go into it and need bearings--I have compiled a crossover chart for after market parts that are much cheaper than Deere. It was compiled for the 40 but many of the numbers are the same on the 430, let me know if you need a copy and send me your e-mail address.

Wayne,

Thanks you very much for your reply and advise.

Another question, If I'm remembering correctly, the noise does not stop when clutch is depressed. What would that indicate the problem to be. I will confirm tonight. Once again, thank you for your help....Russ from NC

Russ,it is hard to communicate clearly by typing. I was taking it for granted the noise was happening while in nuetral and the tractor sitting still. I guess you meant the wheels were still rolling and the trans. was in nuetral. Therefore my test will not tell you much. If the noise stops while sitting still and the clutch depressed, there will be nothing turning in the trans.so the sound would be coming from the clutch or engine, but if the wheels are rolling, there still will be shafts turning in the trans. Sorry.
