Pulled down my 37 B tonight to replace axel seals. Found two steel gaskets obviously made for some other application used as shims on the right side. They were placed between the bull gear and the nut on the axel. Both nuts were loose, and the shafts are VERY close, but not touching. The bearings look good, and I they weren't loose prior to disassembly. The felt washer is mush, and to top it off one of the threaded bosses in the axel housing is broken out inside the housing allowing moisture in. Things really don't look bad in the housing, only slight surface rust. Axel and bull gear look good. Anyone ever seen that happen to a bolt hole before? Are the shims to compensate for bearing wear? Should I replace bearings on the side with the shims?

Scott,
I think you are going to find that the axle is worn at outside bearing retainer. At sometime they ran the tractor with a bad bearing. This lets the axle slide to far into the housing. Two fixes for this. Replace the axle with a good used one or have a machine shop build up the area and machine down. A good used axle would run $75.00 plus UPS.
