About 9 quarts is correct. Loosen up the check bolt below the clutch pully and add oil 'till it comes out.

The '50 A I bought a while back had over 5 gallons of "stuff" in the crank case and was still running. Mostly un burned gas, water, and a little oil. I might suggest a filter and oil change, run it for several hours, and change oil and filter again, just to clean things up a little.

My $0.02,

Terry H

Not sure if they changed capacity after mine, but my '47 takes 11 qts. There is a check on the side of the case below the clutch, just open this and fill till oil begins to come out, should be right close to the 11 qts. Check after it has been run alittle. The extra amount was most likely some gas, possibly flooded at some time prior to you getting her. Always shut off the gas to prevent any possiblity of it happeniing in the future. Also previous owner may have just put in too much.

My 49 A takes 9 quarts. Just open the check valve and add oil until the oil starts to drip out and then you have it.
