Howard, The problem in the carb could be in the needle and seat area. When you cleaned the carb did you pull the nozzle?? You know in 50yrs a lot of people could have been into that carb. I have found some with the wrong nozzle. One of the most over looked thing on 71 series carb is the bowl vent. You have to remove them to get it clean. It is only available from Deere. If it is plugged you will have no vaccum in the fuel bowl therefore the fuel wont run into the bowl fast enough to get enough flow for the load side of carb.I highly recommend you go buy service manual #SM2024 from Deere if you are going to fix these carbs yourself. The other carbs will have the same problem but this 71 series they put the double brass baffle in the hole to keep it from sucking fuel in the bowl vent on rough ground. Some after market needle and seat the hole where the fuel flows is too small if you are pulling dead load throttle plate wide open it wont flow enough to keep the bowl full. The hole where the load needle seats has too be clean. Check close it could have a nice layer of rust in the hole. Plain old carb cleaner won't clean these carbs.EARL

HOWARD!!!! Are you going to promise me to look at that BOWL VENT.I know it's full if you didn't remove it when you glass beaded it. PUTT!!PUTT!! IT will run better with the baffles out and the holes cleaned than with them plugged. But they should be put back NEW. Let us know if you had fun or wished you had fixed it.
