I've been using my '43 JD B to mow my fields and it seems to run great. I say seems because I'm not sure what a really good running one is supposed to sound like. I just know she "pop-pop-pops" right allong and sounds fantastic! Anyway, while I'm not mowing and going down hill, when the tnansmition starts to hold the tractor back, she backfires now and then, "PUCK---PUCK". Is this normal or is something not set right? Thanks in advance.

My 49 B does not backfire but it runs rougher when it's coasting or holding back going down hill. My farmer neighbor who grew up on B's and A's told me that can be tuned out. I'm not so sure these old gals' linkages are tight enough after 50 years to tune that well. It sounds good when pulling hard though.

Slofr8, that is anywhere from somewhat normal to it can be helped.
~Just turn the screw on the carb throttle lever [the one that contacts the vertical spring] in a turn at a time until the backfiring stops while going down hill, that spring is supposed to keep the governor from closing the throttle plate all the way to prevent backfiring & uneven idle. ~If everything is in good shape it will work, if the spring is missing, bent or the throttle plate & shaft bushings are worn it might not help...

I think it is normal. My 48 B does the same thing. I like the sound to it, when it pops back.
