I have a 29 D and have installed a Wico base mount mag on it and if I time it by lining up the mark on the flywheel with the mark on the cover as directed in the service manual it fires too early and kicks back on me. I timed it by determining TDC on the #1 piston and it seems to run ok but I don't know if that's right or not. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replys. Sometimes you have to improvise when you work on these old tractors and I wanted confirmation that I was doing the right thing. This board is a great way to find out things from people who have encountered similar problems.

Dick, you pretty well have it figured out.
~The flywheel on your 29 is marked for "retard timing" & can't be used for the Wico.
~Remove the L/H petcock & put a pencil or wooden rod in the petcock hole, then s-l-o-w-l-y turn the flywheel in the forward direction until the L/H piston just contacts the pencil, then mark the flywheel at the case mark, then turn the flywheel in the other direction until the piston just touches the pencil again & mark the flywheel at the case mark. 1/2 way between the two marks you put on the flywheel is actual TDC. Put a permanent mark at the actual TDC position & erase the two marks you used to determine it... Install the mag & adjust it until the impulse snaps when the actual TDC mark on the flywheel lines up with the case mark. ~Your running timing will be controlled by the mag impulse stop ring setting & I have no idea if it is even adjustable on your base mount Wico. In any case you want the impulse to snap at TDC so you can start it, & take whatever you get on the running timing..... .

THAT'S THE WAY I DID IT. THE WICO HAS BUILT IN ADVANCE SO IT IS TIMED ON TDC. dON
