Hard to Start A

A good friend has a 1949 A he has owned for some time. Being the local JD "expert", I was recruited to help him get it starting better and running. The previous owner overhauled the engine (new pistons, head job, bearings, etc), and for the most part ever since my friend has owned it, it has been hard to start, but ran fine when it did start. Most recently it won't start at all, so I went over to give him a hand. It has 110 psi of compression, timing is perfect, good spark, new plugs, spotless carb, new gas, etc. When you spin it over a little white smoke comes out the pipe and ocasionally a little pop. After trying several plugs, carb settings, and a lot of other stuff, we got it to start, and it ran pretty good. He has since been unable to get to start by himself. I am against a stump on this one. Float level is right, valves holding good, etc. Please help before I pull what little hair I have left out!

Thanks for the quick reply, I knew I could depend on someone here. It is electric start, with a new starter, and has a Wico X mag, not sure of the model suffix, but I can get it. He took the mag off his 1948 B and tried it, but got the same symptoms, so he assumed the mag wasn't the problem. It seems to me that might be the culprit, 'cause I've had some with rusted carbs that would start, just not run too good. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Tony, the electric start part kind of poked a hole in some of my ideas.
~With the mag change [ & no change] that pretty well eliminates that. ~The compression is good & you say the timing is correct [is the flywheel on correctly?].
~That pretty well leaves plug wires [are they solid core & not arcing to the conduit tubes?].
~& the carb, try placing your hand over the intake while cranking to see if that helps, if so, suspect dirt in the passages, bent or worn choke plate, leaking [worn] throttle shaft/bushings, or not closing all the way.....

I did think to check the flywheel for being on right, and it is. The wires I had thought of, but kind of passed off, but I'll make some new ones tomorrow that I know are real wire and are good. Each time you try to start it and it appears really flooded (white smoke out the pipe and a gas smell) the plugs are just damp with gas, not soaked like usual. I somehow feel it is ignition, since there should be some place between no gas in the cylinders, and gas running out, that it should start with proper ignition. I'm going to try new points, condensor, and wires tomorrow and see if that works. If not I'll just have to take a chain along to the shows and give him a pull.
