4020 PTO trouble

I have a 1968 diesel 4020. I hardly ever use the PTO but I do run it occasionally to turn it over. The PTO was in perfect condition when I bought the tractor 3 years ago after it was overhauled. The other day when I went to engage it the handle was harder than usyal to push forward. After a minute i looked down and the PTO was not turning and the handle has no feel or resistance to it as it did before. I haven't looked in a book yet to see what the diagram looks like but I'm assuming a linkage or a spring broke. Is this the most likely case and will I have to split the tractor to fix this? I looked under the dash and that linkage is still attached and moves with the handle.

I have the same model 4020. You might try removing the inspection cover under the clutch. Have someone move the lever for you. The clutch throw out bearing may be bad or the clutch fingers are worn off.If so the it will have to be split.

Good luck,
