I've discovered why me steering is SO LOOSE on my MT. Looks like a previous owner lost the KEY STOCK that locks the steering tube to the shaft of the worm gear that extends out the rear of the gear housing! So a bolt, that should have been an allen screw anyway, was all that was locking the split end of the steering tube to the worm gear, at it was just wearing away on the groove cut into the worm gear. I have the shop manual for my MT and it clearly shows the key, but gives no part number or size specifications.

I'm hoping one of you fine MT experts has a part number or the specs on this key so I don't have to purchase NAPAs entire key stock supply to find out they don't have one that fits.

The key is round on the top were it slips into the worm gear shaft and square on the bottom where it slides into the steering tube. If it were square on both sides, I could measure it up easily.

As always, thanking you in advance for your assistance.

As usual Clooney is right, but Deere no longer recognizes that part number. I got a new one at Ace Hardware. It's a standard key. Having the 1/4" Allen screw drilled out is not bad - it's good! Drill it out to 5/16", put in a grade 8 bolt and nut, along with the new key, tighten the bejunipers out of it and she won't wiggle there any more!

Gary, I believe that key is P/N... 26H 77A... [3/16" X 3/4"]
