Is there such an animal as a 40N. That is a tricycle with a single front wheel. I have never seen one and it does not list it on the cover of the parts manual.

Cousin has one that was his Grandpa's. The id plate has it as a 40T. It's also an all fuel.

The tractor is called a 40T-N. I'm restoring one right now. I've also seen another one already restored.

Tinman,
Where does the referance "N" come from? I have just about every book on the model 40 tractors and I havn't been able to find these refered to as anything other than the "Single front wheel attachment". I have been wanting to change my other 40T to the ("N") front wheel just because I like the look.

In middle Georgia, back in the late 50's and early 60's they used single front wheel tractors for cultivating before power steering became popular, the single wheel would follow the furrow and not take as much wrestling with to keep it straight with the row plowed.. LGD

Terry,

The single front wheel was a standard attachment part number AM 1037 page 70-3 in the parts catalog. I have seen a picture of one on www.jd40.com referanced as a "N". None of my books show a listing for a "N". I believe that it is refered to as a Tricycle with a single front wheel attachment. Of course if I am wrong some one will let us know.

Terry, there is not a 40N. What you have is a T with the single wheel attachment. Back then farmers could order several front end configurations, even wide fronts for a T. The available models for the 40 were: T,S,U,V,W,H,and C for the crawler.
