Anyone know what would be the cause of an intermittant spark? If I pull the plug and watch it it will not spark continously.New points, condensor.Ground and pos connections are good. Could it be the alternator?
thanks
jack

Jack, while the alternator won't directly cause a spark problem, the conversion to 12 volts could if the original 6 volt coil was used without a ballast resistor or a 12 volt coil wasn't used. ~When converted to an alternator the ground was probably changed to negative so make sure the coil has the [ - ] terminal hooked to the distributor.
~If you can't find anything else, try powering the coil directly from the battery post on the starter to see if that eliminates your problem [the ignition switches on the 420 are noted for failing to a high resistance in the ignition feed contacts.

I have had lots of problems with new condesors being bad as well as problems with Champion plugs. If the plugs are old they more than likely are the problem.
