The 48 A started up Friday for the 1st time in 25 years!! I about jumped out of my boots with excitement when it took off. I ran in and woke my wife up (she's expecting), but she wasn't as excited as I was. Go figure! It seems to be using a lot of gas however no matter how I adjust the idle needle. What in the carb could be causing this to happen? I noticed that when I shut the gas valve off on the temporary tank I have hooked up, the tractor seems to run better as the gas goes down. The carb is a DLTX 71 that was apparently once converted to propane use but reconverted back to gas. Any suggestions??

Mike, how much gas is it using, at what RPM, & are you seeing black smoke from the stack?
~Maybe your float is sticking, fuel logged, mis-adjusted or the vent is partially plugged or the air cleaner is plugged or the idle system is partially plugged.
~If the RPM is a little high or the air cleaner is partially plugged you could be pulling fuel from the load part of the carb system.
~Set the idle screw at 1-1/2 to 2 turns out from seated & set the load screw at 7/8 to 1 turn out from seated & see how it runs there [then adjust from there when warm & put under load].
~Make sure the ignition timing is set to 25-30*, if it is running late it will use more fuel.
~I wouldn't worry about fuel usage [as long as it runs good] until you get it out & work it a while as a good work-out will sometimes improve the engine performance & economy.....

I'm estimating these numbers, but I'd say it used about 1/4 gal in less than 5 minutes at a low RPM (the throttle wasn't pushed in very much). I did see some black smoke, but I expected this since I'm using break-in oil for the new rings. It wasn't a lot of black smoke though. I initially set the idle screw at about 1-1/2 turns. I know the air cleaner is not plugged cause I just put it back on after a thorough cleaning. How do I set the ignition timing at 25-30? I set it per the operator's manual lining up the timing marks. Thanks for the help Clooney!

Hey, Clooney, I think I might be able to pass along a piece of information you don't know but might find useful. Never figured that would happen! When you did the 25-30 in your answer above, you used the * instead of the so I am guessing you don't know how to get the . This is how you do it. You press and hold down the ALT key. While it is down you key 0176 ON YOUR NUMERIC KEYPAD. Then release the ALT key and you get your degree sign. Don't try to use the numbers above your letters because they won't work. You have to use the numeric keypad. Try it! I think you will like it.

Thanks Loren, you're correct, I didn't know that.. Anything else I could find useful?

There are more special characters that can be typed that way. There is a program called charmap.exe in the c:\windows folder that lists such characters and their codes. You can copy these characters to the clipboard from charmap.exe. However, not all fonts support these characters. True-type fonts such as Georgia ref, Arial, and Times New Roman have more such characters in them than most screen fonts like MS Serif, MS Sans Serif, and Small Fonts.

Character 0147 and 0148 are left and right quotation marks, and are not supported by most screen fonts.

There is actually another set of such codes, in addition to the four digit ones, but I don't know of any chart of them that would be likely to be in your computer. In this set, a pound sign is 156, and a cent sign is 155...
