I have a question about a John Deere 4010 gas. I am able to get a 4010 for $2000 and was wondering what it was worth? Also the pto when engaged cuts out after a few seconds. The guy who has it isn't the most mechanically inclined person and says its the long shaft after you disassemble the pto end thats the problem. I'm a Ford and International guy so i'm not quite sure. I know its worth the $2000 at least for parts but not so sure of the cost if I have to rebuild the power take off. It has about 4000 hrs on it and is in about 6o to 70% condition. Tires are fair and paint is about 40%. Any info would be greatly appreciated.----THANKYOU ALL

Since you said that the PTO "cuts out" after awhile I would say that your PTO clutch is shot. This requires spliting the tractor, when you do it theres a template that your local deere dealer should have to set it before you reinstall it. But if your PTO doesn't engage at all, theres a small pin in the middle of the pto that has to be pushed in for 540, lots of times people force this pin in and it either gets bent or shears off, this would also require splitting the tractor.

Around here, good running 4010 GAS tractors tend to cost $4000 or so, some a little more, some less. The upper price range assumes wfe, dual scv and decent rubber. I would say that $2000 is cheap enough, even if you have to fix the pto. It will eat a good quantity of gas if you work it hard---8 gallons/hr or so, less if it's doing lighter duties.
