I need a new universal joint(#AT10791-sub#AT77490)for a JD 430 that I'm working on. This is the one for the steering shaft. JD wants $300 and some odd dollars for one! Is there a better/cheaper way to get this fixed? Can these be rebuilt? Can you make one up from other parts, maybe cut out the old joint and weld in a generic one?

Check with hot rodders and magazines or go to hot rod shows and ask questions plus look. I have seen several small U-joints used in hot rod steering systems. I think one of these could be adapted or used directly. If you get a manufacturer name get on the internet and get a catalogue or check with a salesman for your specs.

A machine shop could no doubt weld up the holes, redrill and put in new pins. This would probably be expensive.
