420C charging system woes

I have completely overhauled the electrical system on my early 420 crawler, replacing every electrical component except the starter and battery which were fine, and switching the polarity back the way it should be (+ ground). I polarized the generator by grounding the "F" terminal and touching the battery terminal to the "A" generator terminal to get a little spark. It starts and runs like a champ but the ammeter shows no charge or discharge, no matter what I do. Should there be voltage at the "A" terminal? There is none now when running at a fast idle. Battery voltage is 6.5 across the terminals when engine running @ fast idle. I was extra careful to wire everything the way it should go. Which is more likely to be bad, the regulator or the generator. I have had new (rebuilt?)generators turn out to be bad right out of the box (on Fords I have had). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Clooney, if you are out there, any tips?, as I know you are good at electrics.
Also another question which may sound dumb, but is JD Hy-Gard fluid OK for the trans, rear end and final drives?
Thanks, guys

Tubba, you could have a bad regulator or regulator ground or ?.
~Did you swap the wires at the ammeter to reflect the positive ground system? [probably not the problem with only 6.5 volts across the battery at fast idle].
~First do you have battery voltage at the [BAT] terminal on the voltage regulator? If not find & repair that first.
~If ok on battery voltage at the [BAT] terminal, then due to the fact that the regulator is difficult to get to on the 420, lets test the generator first.. Remove the [F] wire at the generator [smaller of the two], then remove the generator belt, then jump battery power from the starter power post to the [A] post on the generator [does it motor?] if so, with it motoring re-connect the [F] wire [does it slow down] if not ground the [F] terminal on the generator [does it slow down now?]..If it motors & slows down the generator is probably good. If it doesn't motor or slow down suspect a bad generator.
~If it motored & didn't slow down with the [F] wire hooked up but did with the [F] terminal grounded suspect a bad regulator, bad regulator ground, or an open in the wire from the generator [F] post to the regulator [Fld] terminal.
~If the nothing outlying found so far, remove the [Arm] wire from the [A] post on the generator & jump [BAT] to [GEN] at the regulator & see if you have battery voltage on the generator end of that wire [if not suspect an open in the wire from the regulator to the generator.
~If all checks out so far replace the regulator. If something found that doesn't fit the above post back..... .

Hi, Clooney: an update: I tried the tests you suggested, and it came down to the generator will not motor. Everything else checked out OK, ammeter, voltage at the regulator "BATT" terminal, grounds, etc. SO it looks like maybe a bad generator. And right out of the box. I have had this happen before. I had bought a Ford 6v 2 brush generator that actually turned out to be a Delco 3-brusher with none of the internal wiring hooked up. I took it back and the place was very good about crediting it. So now I will take it to the local auto electric specialist to have it checked/fixed. thanks loads for your help

I'll keep ya posted. I'll take that generator in this week for service, then we'll see what happens. Thanks for the interest.

Thanks for getting back to me on this, Cloooney. I'm printin' this post then heading out to the garage for some diagnostic work. thanks again.
