Just picked up a JD 820 but can't get the pony motor running. Rebuilt the starter, Rebuilt the Carb, Have Spark and gas, and the fireing order is right. Any suggestions? What should I look for now?

John, make sure the air cleaner isn't blocked by years of crud blowing back from the big diesel.
~Make sure the exhaust isn't restricted due to oil build up from the pony.
~Loosen the knurled ring on the pony oil pressure fuel shut off & hold it in to allow the carb to prime. [sometimes it helps to blow in the starting fuel tank while holding the priming button in]
~Run a compression test on the pony, maybe the cylinders are washed of oil & the little jewel isn't making enough compression to start.
~Make sure [again] that you are getting a bright blue spark, a wimpy little yellow one won't start it, but will look like a spark while watching. If the spark is or looks weak, remove the coil's center core & clean the rust from it & clean the points contacts. The plug wires also have a habit of pulling out of he back of the coils so check that. If the battery is low or sulfated, the pony coils won't get enough current while cranking due to the resistor & starter draw so try cranking it with a 6 volt battery charger on the battery.
~If you haven't already, install new J-8, j8-c or AC-45 spark plugs [if the plugs were fuel fouled the spark could be shorting down the center electrode under compression]
~Make sure it is sparking when the "V" marks on the flywheel & clutch housing line up on compression.
~If all the above checks out, post back & we'll did a little deeper into the mysterious Deere pony..... .

You have good compression? Set the timing?
