I have a black dash pony start JD 820 that is difficult to start when cold. I go thro the starting procedure as per the owners manual. When the engine starts, it runs fine, but I find that I get blowback thro the pony aircleaner, and oil is forced out around the pony engine starter motor. Does this indicate worn bores, and would new rings and a valve job help?. Who would be able to supply rings and gaskets for this tractor?
Thanks, LJ.

LJ, the pony motor air cleaner is the big diesel's breather system, & if oil is blowing back through the pony's air cleaner you more than likely have blow-by in the big diesel. That coupled with hard starting [a diesel needs good compression to produce heat to ignite the fuel] points to worn rings or worn bores or piston problems.
~I can't tell you if new rings & a valve job would help without pulling the engine apart & measuring everything, but a good guess is it would.
~A good place to start is a compression test [not easy on a 2-cylinder diesel]
~While I'm not recommending one place over another, people who deal with Albert at Renaissance Tractor [1-800-784-0026] seem to be pleased with his products & recommendations.

Thanks for the advice Clooney. You seem to have great knowlage of JD 2 cylinder tractors. I find your replies to peoples questions very interesting and informative. I have made contact with Albert at Renaissance Tractor, and he has everything that I may need to carry our a re-build, and is happy to ship any parts to the UK.
Thanks again,
LJ.
