I know you guys get tired of seeing the "What is it worth questions", but I need some help. I came across a 37 B in an older gentlemans barn. It is stuck, radiator is shot but it is complete with original mag, steering wheel, carb, and rims and the sheet metal is in good to excellent condition and readable tag. I asked him how much he wanted and he told me to make him an offer. I have a figure in my head, but I wanted to see what y'all would offer him. He is a "dealer" in antique tractors so he knows his stuff. Could I ask for some help on this one please????? Thanks guys I really appreciate it.

I have run across people like this many of times, the best way to do it is to figure out what you would have to put into it for the restoration. a good restored unstyled B on cutoff wheels and new tires will bring $4000-$4500. the engine being stuck isn't too major, the old Deeres have been noted for not being too hard to un stick. but subtract what you would have in it to restore it from what it would be worth when it is done and then subtract another $300 for things you could have missed, then offer him that if it is too low for him then he reall doesn't want to sell it anyway. but like some others have said, the wheels are the key I have seen restored unstyled B's bring $8500 on full factory round spokes. the cast rears and pressed steel fronts are worth about $500 more than cutoffs. I am assuming it is a regular row crop B and not a BN or a BW if it is a BN, toy could offer him $3500 and not be hurt, and if it is a BW you could offer $8000 and not get hurt, Good luck

Yeah I agree that it is not the best way to do business, but I doubt the guys is trying to bait me. He is 78 years old and was a very nice gentleman when my brother and myself talked with him. I just think he wants to hang on for sentimental value!

It seems like a bad way to do business, but I've seen a lot of deals start this way. I think the general feeling is that if the buyer offers a price that is accepted, he won't feel as if he is getting the shaft. And if the seller accepts that price, he won't feel like he is getting the shaft either. I've seen this referred to as the buyer having to do both the buying and the selling. Come up with what you think is a reasonable price and offer him somewhat less. If he accepts, you'll be getting a good deal. If not, you can always come up some. I hoped like heck I could buy my "G" for $250 as the guy selling it didn't want it and had no idea of the value, but I was prepared to go up to around $1500 based on what I thought I was getting. When he said he wanted $650, I jumped at it. It turned out to be more of a basket case than I expected, but I still think I got a good deal. Just keep both eyes open and don't fall in love with the tractor until it's yours. There's plenty of good ones out there yet. My two cents.

the premise of your deal is flawed. The seller needs to give you a price.

I figure if anyone really wants to sell something, they will know how much they want. I really hate to set another man's price, but it can be the only way at times.

In the condition you are talking about, figuring the tires are so-so, I would offer $500.00 and go from there. I guess it all comes down to; try to get it bought at a price you are comfortable with, and he can live with! I bought my 38 B a few years back for $350.00, but it sounds like this one might be in a little better shape. (Same kinda deal, he wanted an offer, and 350 was what I offered him)

If he is a dealer, he is just hanging bait in front of you to see if he can catch a fish or not. Tell hin to give you a call when he has worked up a price on the tractor. Just my two cents.

I generally don't pay more than $500 for a tractor that is stuck or doesn't run. No way to tell what mechanical condition it is in. If it is a rare model that is a different story. If this B has round spokes it would be worth 2000 just for the wheels from what I've seen on this site.

If he is collector he knows what its worth. What kind of wheels and tires?? I bought a unstyled "G" one time. I kept after him till he set price. I would have give $1500. But he finally said he wouldn't take a penny less than $550. I wrote the check. His comment was aren't you going to jew me a little.I really didn't know what to say.(grin) (grin) Earl in Illinois
