I was so proud of the H I was going to restore. Not much compression, put in 4 new valves. Still only 35 pounds compression (should be 80). Tore it apart and put in new rings, honed out the cylinders, still standard size (new rings fit tight in cylinder) Put it back together, set the valves at .015 as the book says. Compression at only 40. Cylinders seemed good. To get it to start, I have to hold my hand in front of the carburetor - choke doesn't do it - then it kicks off the first time. If I pull the coil wire off to stop it, it will kick right off again when I crank it. It just won't pull the gas in with just the choke.
The pistons have an extra groove at the end, any idea what that groove is for? The parts book shows three compression rings and one oil ring, which is what came with the ring set. I would appreciate any comments. Thanks

Are you doing the compression check with both the throttle and choke wide open? Are you cranking it by hand? Or cranking with an electric starter?

This may be oversimplifying the problem, but how much have you run the tractor since the rebuild? Have you worked it good and for long enough to get the rings seated or at least begin to seat them? Did you get a good cross-hatch of the proper angle when you honed it out? Did you make sure to offset your ring end-gaps when you assembled? How far down in the bore did you check the rings for fit? The bores will be worn more at the top of piston travel than the bottom. I'm just trying to bounce some ideas off you to see if any of these could be the source of your problem. Good luck with the "B".

The extra groove on the top of the piston is the carbon groove. It will collect carbon while running and will appear black and dirty when first taken apart. My B book warned to not clean that groove during rebuild. The engine man I hire to help with the head work convinced me to clean it any way.I have not tried to start it yet. Soon I hope. Good luck with yours. Don't give up.

I hate to tell you this, but with compression that low after reassembly you have a problem that's probably causing you to do the extra work to start the tractor. Could be the valve seats, but probably it's the cylinder walls / rings. Physical "tight" fit to the layman won't tell you enough. The cylinder walls could have some ellipse to them, or the gap may still be too great. You probably need to have the cylinder bored out oversize, new pistons and new rings. I've been where you have been.

Don't give up! Make sure your battery is in good shape, remove both plugs when you do the compression check, and check your compression gauge. They are not always accurate.

Hey don't quit yet. You're a lot farther along on yours than I am. I've had mine 2 years and haven't heard a pop out of it yet. I've had to bore mine .090 oversize. I'm almost ready to start putting it back together now. I was almost to the point of throwing in the towel, but these fine folks encouraged me to stay after it. What year is your H? Mine's a '39. Good luck with your project.

An uncommon cause of such symptoms can be a worn or out of time cam.

Is it an electric start, or are you checking the compression while cranking it over by hand? If it runs well, and the only problem is the problem with the choke, maybe something else is wrong, such as bad intake manifold, or intake gaskets. Have you carefully checked that the choke is closing TIGHT? I don't recall... does it have a solid choke butterfly, or on with a spring-loaded poppet in it? If the choke is closing properly, I would think it would be nearly as restrictive as putting your hand over the carb. Have you checked your float level, and other carb adjustments?

Did you open up the throttle and open up the choke when you checked the compression? My G had almost 6psi more compression after it got warm than it did cold.

Is the motor hot? it wont show max compression, unless up to about 160.
