Do I need a special alternator or will any one work?
Also, any special problems in the changeover.
Thanks.

I dont know if this will help but on my 60 i had an alternator that come off a toyota that fit perfect. Then heres the downside it took an ext regulator. But i went to a local automotive electrical place that repairs starters and such. They gave me a very simple regulator. One wire to the field of the alternator one to the battery post and one to the ignition. Charges perfect.

Dick, it depends on how much work you want to put into it, & what you have access to?
~The easiest to install is a 1 wire Delco alternator as it only needs one wire hooked to it. The down sides are cost [it is more expensive], those 1 wire alternators usually need more RPM to initialize after start-up so the engine usually has to revved up after start up [being a 620 that runs faster helps that problem] & if the tractor is stored for long periods the regulator will usually have to be jumped to get it to charge the first time after storage.
~Probably the most widely used, easiest to obtain & cheapest route is to use a Delco 10-SI from a mid 70's G.M. car or truck. They are everywhere, fairly easy to install, work good & store well.
~Your other options are Ford, Deere & Chrysler type alternators as well as the imports, but those are harder to install, harder to find info on & some need additional hardware.
~My personal recommendation for tractor use is the old conventional Delco 10-SI alternator in the under 55-60 AMP output configuration [the 60 amp & up outputs will require heavier tractor wiring & impose unwanted additional wear on the fan gears]. ~Installing the Delco 1 wire amounts to cobbling the mounting bracket slightly & cobbling the adjusting strap slightly , installing a different belt & just extending the battery wire at the regulator & hooking it to the [BAT] terminal on the back of the alternator, [most 1 wire alternators are 60+ amp output & SHOULD have the battery wire from the alternator to the ammeter & battery up-gauged to a heavier gauge wire].
~Installing the Delco 10-SI conventional, amounts to the same mounting bracket & adjusting strap modifications & the addition of a resistor & diode in a second wire from the ign switch to the alternator #1 terminal. ~Let me know which way you want to go, & if you want to use a conventional Delco 10-SI or Delco 1 wire & I will E-Mail you a wire diagram....

I have a 3414 International tractor, I wish to convert to one wire alternator. Could you give me some information and a wiring diagram, if you have one.
Thanks for your time,
