A Little 4020 Block Problem

In addition to my hydraulic problems, the tractor started overheating last weekend, the first time I've actually made her do any work. I let her cool off, checked the coolant level, and it was way down. I know it was up a week or two before that.

Last night I had a bad feeling, and decided to drain the oil. My worst fears confirmed - there was all the coolant. I notice a little oil leaking around the head gasket in several places. So what do you think - blown head gasket? Or cracked block? Anyone care to guess at a cost? (I live in Canada, about 25 miles north-west of Toronto)

I figure the previous owner topped up the coolant and changed the oil just before trucking it to the auction. Live and learn (the hard way).

The easiest way to check for where the anti-freeze leak is coming from is to remove the oil pan and pressurize the cooling system. I use a cooling system pressure tester and pump up the pressure in the cooling system to about 10 psi. Usually you can then see from underneath where the leak is coming from.

Alan, more than likely the sealing rings in the block at the bottom of the sleeves are leaking. If so pistons and sleeves will have to come out.You can pull pan and look at bottom of sleeves to see if it is leaking there.I think a 4020 has an oil cooler,it could be getting in there.Good luck,Jim
