730 diesel will not "take" in reverse following certain forward gears. Shifter in R, but acts as neutral. Moving to some other forward gears before reverse solves problem; moving to others does not. Do not use tractor enough to have determined whether this always happens after the same particular forward gears. Also have not determined which forward gears relate to the problem and which other gears eliminate it. No strange transmission noises at any time. Worn shifter? Worn something else?

Sounds like my reverse problem is similar to Richard's 3rd and 5th gear problem. Now that I think about it, it may be that moving to a gear in the other half of the gears is what it takes to reactivate reverse.

Good thinkin' Mike!

I kind of bet you're right. If you get the hang of moving from the left to right side of the shifter gate, then back again -- you should be able to run it that way for the next 20 years or so with no problem.

Mike, same advice; make sure you let up on the pulley brake & allow the pulley to spin very slowly & I'll bet you won't have any more problems [at least for a while yet]. ~The problem with extra play in the shifter rails, shifter, or worn bearings is that extra play allows the underdrive/overdrive gear set to not completely mesh before allowing the lever to come out of the gate slot & move to the reverse gear rail, therefore the reverse gear gets engaged but the underdrive remains not completely engaged & pops out as soon as power is applied when the clutch is re-engaged. By allowing the pulley to spin slightly while shifting will let the underdrive engage completly with no effort & it will engage all the way....
