Both of the breakaway couplers on my 4020 leak badly. I bought the rebuild kits from JD and replaced all the o-rings (not a fun job at all), but the @#$% things still leak. I was thinking of replacing the couplings with S40 quick couplers mounted in Safeway breakway brackets, but I'm afraid it will look like a hack job. The piping would be straight forward, but making a mounting bracket may be tough (I don't have a brake). Has anyone out there done anything like this? Thanks....

Make sure that you use o-rings and backup rings around the barrels inside the breakaway housing. A number of years ago some engineering "genius" came up with v style seals to go around the barrels. They will not seal around the barrels inside the old style breakaway housings. Be sure to install the backup rings to the outside of the o-rings away from oil pressure.

I couldn't find the o-rings at the tips! I saw them on the JD parts diagram, but I just couldn't find them. I'll try again! Thanks for all the good responses....

I agree completley with G-MAN here. If the orings are installed correctly, then your barrels are worn, retaining balls worn or bad tips. It is best to stay with factory design here. If everything is up to par, there is no reason for it to leak.

Alan,
I have rebuilt one or two of them. Is it leaking with hoses attached or not? I have recently bought a 4020 and added a second valve on a stand on the axle, would much rather have the original set up and will be changing it as soon as possible. I put the breakaway coupler from safeway in the original position, it dont look too bad adn the set up works pretty good. It has a double spool valve on the fender to run the front end loader and I just t'ed in to the supply line to that valve for the additional valve. It works but like I say I would much rather have orginal coupleers and valves. HOpe this helps somewhat.

I bought kits, for my 4020, to update from the old John Deere style couplers from the local John Deere dealer. They fit in the original housing and look like original equipment.

Did you replace the actual couplers themselves or just the o-rings that seal them in the bores? The couplers can get worn enough to leak with even new o-rings. The balls that retain the tips in the couplers can also become worn and not hold the tip in tightly, leading to leakage. Are the tips on the implements you're using worn? Did you replace the tip o-rings? If everything is in good condition and properly installed, there is no reason for your couplers to leak. I would investigate these items further before ditching the factory set-up, as it will be the best option by far.
