Just got a parts order and found a fibred
head gasket for a late "A". Last ones I got
were metal. Something been substituted ?
Last ones I ordered were about seven years ago.
Any different installation than the metal ones?
{A 2329 R} Also curious about valve spring tension
seems like the new ones aren't as stiff as the old
ones. Any way to check them ?? Thanks. pb

I did as deere puller said with my fiber head gasket and havent had any trouble at all. I thought my valve springs were a little weak to, so I got some machine washers that fit in the index of the head where the sring rides and put 2 under each if I remember, since they were 18 gauge washers. Worked good for me.

Poorerbut, I haven't used one of those fiber gaskets on the "A" but have on others & I use #3 Permatex around the outer edges & around the water passages [don't use on the fire rings though]. Make sure you do a re-torque after a few heating cooling cycles.
~On the valve springs, you can do as Deere Puller said & take then to a machine shop, or get a rough idea by placing a piece of plywood or preferably steel plate on your bathroom scale then putting the valve spring on the plate & pushing down on the spring with a length of 2X4 across the spring while someone measures the distance between the 2X4 & the bottom plate.... I don't have a book handy but believe the "A" springs should be between 35 & 45 lbs @ 2.75" height. Push to 2.75 inches & then read the force. Keep the upper 2X4 level & keep in mind a bathroom scale probably doesn't have good resolution in the under 50 lb. range...

The new gaskets are quite a bit better than the metal ones, as many of those have leaked in recent years. The fiber gasket should be installed dry & torqued into place, re-torqued as specified in manual. In my experience, they are a better product.

Take your valve springs into a local machine shop & have them test on a lever bench. Given the low R's, float usually isn't an issue, even with weak springs, but they will tell you whether they are OK for sure. Usually free, maybe $10.
