My brother just got our '42 H home this weekend and we saw it for the first time. What a great site, my question is, does anyone have a good close up picture of the fly wheel and starter for an H. The reason I believe it is electric start is there are three gauges on the "dash" and the flywheel does not have the look of the hand crankers, however the starter teeth are missing. Can these be removed or what am I missing on this ol' girl. Thanks in advance.

Kris, my repair catalog indicates the flywheel on an H with a starter is part number AH 946 R, which is an assembly consisting of "flywheel, H913 R, with starter gear and bolts". The ring gear (starter gear) is separable from the flywheel, and is part number H 914 R. The hand-start flywheel is part number AH 570 R, an assembly consisting of "flywheel, H227 R, with bolts and driving pin". Unfortunately, I don't know the exact differences between the various flywheels to know if you can tell them apart if the ring gear is missing. However, Deere sold the optional electric stuff for H's as: 1) Lighting equipment only (this means lights and no starter), 2) Starting equipment only, and 3) Lights and starting equipment. Therefore, it is possible that your H was equipped with lights only, and never had a starter.

Dan thanks for your reply. All the information was very helpful. The fly wheel on this H does not have the "finger grips" on the back side of the flywheel and has a lip on the edge of it like something is supposed to be attached. Also the vent tube going from the governor to the air intake has a nice bend in it right where a starter should be and it is a factory bend as far as I can tell. I appreciate all of your info. Thank you and anyone else with info let me have it!! Thanks

Well Kris, from your description, it sounds like someone has removed the starter and ring gear. Not knowing a lot about the details of the electrical accessories for the H, I wasn't aware of the flywheel differences, but it appears they are distinctly different if there are no "finger grips". At serial number 27000, a lot of changes were made to the H to accomodate the addition of the electrical options. For example, the breather tube you referred to got a "hump" bent into it for starter clearance. Also, the upper and lower water pipes, the bottom radiator tank, the valve cover breather, the exhaust pipe, the main frame/tool box, and a number of other things were changed to accept electrics, especially for battery clearance. Also, the serial plate location was changed from the flywheel side to the belt pulley side so the serial plate wouldn't be covered by the starter. All of those changes were made as a major mid-year (1941) model change, regardless if the tractor actually was equippped with the optional electrics or not.

Once again Dan thanks for all the information. I can now start to get her back to original.
