What can I do to make my 1948 John Deere G pull the best. Should I bore and stroke a little with DOME pistons. And port and polish the head. Would this be the best? Help me

..... ..... Here's whatchya do if you can get it bored and stroked for free "maybe"

get ya some 6.5" alumium pistons. stroke the crank to 8.5" Achieve this by shortening the diameter of the rod journal to 1/2" under stock, and the stroking it the rest of the way. You'll have to have rods made. (murphysmotorservice.com) and while you're dealing whith him get a set of his high ratio roller rockers. (around 700 for the rods and 350 for the rockers.) Have the cam redegreed to 720 specs. USE THE SWIRL HEAD....You can have it cut down to match the compression and fuel combonation you want to run. The flat head is boost compression, (too much actually) but isn't as efficient as the swirl head. All I did to the carb is take out the choke shaft and gound the throttle shaft down to optimize flow. All this stuff is gonna be a bit out of your 1000 budget, but assuming you can get it bored and stroked for free, it won't be drastically over. If your rules will allow it, use a K&N paper element filter and ditch the heavy stock filter.

Results: I have dual exhaust on mine with the intake passage completely isolated from the two exhaust passges and this helps me out some.....but other than that this is my tractor. I have 30 degree firestones (uncut) and I pull the #5500 open class in 4th gear. and spin the engine up to around 1700RPM. I've never been beat in the uncut tire class, sometimes I run in the cut tire class, but I don't do as well, wins are usually down in the lower classes where I can use the speed I can make to my advantage.

Next year I'm putting on cut tires and I'm leaving the engine alone. I'm gonna win me that season opener 10,500 Open trophy that's about 6 feet tall I've always wanted!!!!!

Styled G,

I want to run in the antique tractor pulls. Your tractor sure does sound good though. Go out and win that 6 foot tall trophy! Good luck

Mike, You have to tell us about your tractor. What block, what head, what carb, whats the comp, what kind of fuel are you trying to run????When you say John Deere "G" that can be anything. Have you Dynoed the tractor?? There are a lot of things you can do to improve your tractor, but you have to have a long range plan and a HP goal.Money and your talent will be the end results. There are a lot of people here that can help you. Listen to all and check to see if they can prove what they say. Ask for names and satisfied customers (PULLERS).Good luck with your (G).Keep us informed. Earl In Illinois

As long as she has enough power to spin out in low gear, get a set of big, old, hard & cut Firestone 23 degree tires.

Then look for a set of road worn hard, old,Firestone 23 degree tires then.100's of HP won't pull without 1st having traction and weight balance.

In my area people all have traction balance and weight down pat. Once everybody has that figured out it will still take that plus more horsepower and speed to win!!

Real puller, my dad has a JD 60 and has won pulls with it, tires, weight balance, expience, and sometimes luck will win. Unless the tract is a fast pulling tract.

use a style block bored .125 over with a set of m&w style pistons with a unstyled flat head and some cam work will get you around 70 hp

My tractor has is the one that 520-lp mentioned. You are welcome to come look at the Dyno needle any time you want to. I've been hooked to two different Dyno's. Both read from 69-72 horsepower.

bore the block out with gas pistons strech the rods about a half inch. that will get compression up and spend about a thousand.any stroking will cost about another thousand.more is more money
