I have a 1943 H with a Wico C mag. This tractor will start if pulled. When timed with the top of the mag all the way forword, it will not impulse. By itself, it does impulse with a good spark. What do i do to fix or is there a good book out there for this.

Thank You

Andy, are you saying the mag will NOT snap [impulse] while bolted on the tractor? Or it just won't snap when rotated all the way forward?
~Will it snap [impulse] if rotated to the rear some?
~Looking at the rear of the mag, is the stop ring [impulse stop] on the L/H side [if not move it there] & the stop ring hash mark at 3-1/2 marks to the left of the center case mark?.. [if not loosen the 4 screws & move it there]. If it still won't snap while on the tractor post back.....

Will not snap when rotated forword or backword on the tractor. Am I to use the marks on the bottom or top of mage when going 3.5 marks?

Thank You

Andy, use the top marks on both the ring & case. [center case mark = 12.5* & each case mark = 5* so 3.5 marks left of center will give you 30* running timing] ~My "H" when run on gasoline actually runs better at 25* which is 2-1/2 marks left of center....

I just tried it at 3.5 and it does not impulse when I rotate the top of the mag to the tear. Will start dropping it a mark at a time and see what happens.

Thank You

With the magneto Rotated all the way forword and it indexed at 2 marks, she will impulse about an inch below the LH Impulse mark on the flywheel.

Whould it be better to remove the hydralic pump and reset the governor gear to the timing gear? Are these two gears marked? I haven't found a Maint manual, Just parts and owners.

Thank You

Andy, I'm a little confused here. Are we talking about the mag NOT SNAPPING AT ALL when set to 3-1/2 marks, or are we talking about it just not snapping at the correct time?
~Don't worry about any marks on the governor gear, just bring the flywheel to L/H impulse on the flywheel lining up with the case mark & rotate the governor gear so the mag drive flange has the slots running fore/aft [parallel with the ground] & it will be in the correct place [if it isn't there now you won't be ale to get the mag to snap at the correct place]..... ....

The Mag does snap when rotated. It does not impulse or snap when the flywheel is lined with the LH Impulse. I have rotated the Mag, top forword, and then back to try to get the impulse to snap, but it does not.

Sorry for the confussion. I hope this helps.

Thank You

Andi, I understand now.
~Before rotating the top of the mag to the rear, rotate the flywheel 1/2 turn in the [backwards direction] & then back in the starting direction to [L/H impulse lined up with the case mark again] to arm the mag....

Yes, I did that with no luck. When I tighten the mag with the top all the wa forword she impules about 1.25 inches before the LH Impulse mark comes up.

Thank You

Andy, you are furnishing conflicting information. In your other post you said it was snapping "inch below the LH Impulse mark on the flywheel" [that would make it late] . Now you are saying it snaps "about 1.25 inches before the L/H Impulse mark comes up" which would put it above the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel & [make it early]. Remember I can't see the tractor so your information is all I have to go on.
~Are the mag drive flange slots running fore/aft when the flywheel is at [L/H impulse on the flywheel] lined up with the case mark? If not that should be set before going on.....

Sorry. I am not a good mechanic and have a hard time delivering my meaning. Mag snaps before it gets to the mark.

Mag slot is not perfectly straight.

Andy, how far off is it? & presume it is tilted to the front [front slot lower than the rear].

Clooney, I saw something earlier about a hydraulic pump in his post and wonder if that hydraulic pump shaft has some play in it making his timing run wrong where he can't adjust it in? Dad and I played with an A for a long time until we finally took the pump out and had it redone. The shaft wore both in the slots and the pin through the shaft.

Jerry, the pump drives off the L/H side on the "H" & doesn't go between the mag & governor like the live pump on an "A", so any slop wouldn't effect the mag position.....
