OK..the flywheel is off..whew..heavy!
There is a metal ring that moves with the crank..it has a piece missing and it seems to be welded to the flywheel..it doesn't seem to leak oil..wonder why thats like that?? do i need to address it?? I joined a 2 cynlinder club lately..and spoke with someone there and he has used JB weld for loose flywheel troubles with 2 tractors and he plows with both...he cleaned everything off with acetone and then added the JB and reassembled and tighten it all the way down, and let it sit for a week. Never has come loose again...I don't notice that a great deal of wear on either flywheel or crank....so I am hoping that the noise I heard on the other side was from the flywheel...but what is the function of that ring????
Thanks!!!JD60

JD60, that ring you are referring to is the "flywheel spacer" & it's main propose is to space the flywheel out, help with the crank end play, & mainly keep the engine oil from leaking out the flywheel side of the engine.
~By your explanation I don't understand where the spacer is broken, & what piece of it is welded to the flywheel. ~In any case, those spacers shouldn't be too hard to find used & probably should be replaced, replace the cork ring in it also.
~On the J.B. weld for the flywheel repair, you can try it but I haven't ever seen it hold up for long under constant use. It will probably hold for a while but is softer than the original steel & will eventually start to fail. I think in most cases the re-tightening of the flywheel on the splines & the use of new bolts with a good tightening of the through bolts is what is actually working, & the J.B. weld isn't doing that much. If you can get the flywheel tight without breaking the hub, it will hold for quite some time. If the splines are worn [in the flywheel] & [on the crank] to the point where you can't get it tight, I don't think anything will keep it tight, at least not for long...

Clooney...its just a small piece 1/3 the size of a piece of pop corn..then someone welded it to the flywheel in the orietation in which the flywheel is placed on the crank..strange ehh. Now about replacing that spacer...do i take that housing off and remove from the inside of it??? Will I get an oil bath??? I take it the bearing is further in to hold the crank in place while I do this...
Thanks!!! Clooney

JD60, Clooney mentions the "cork" seal, Your tractor may have a cork seal in the spacer, but it should have a rubber seal as cork seals were phased out near the end of A tractor production. Also an A spacer may have been installed(w/cork seal). While you are there ck. out the outer A4398R plastic thrust washer(2 used-1 on inside of bearing housing also) and replace if needed(these are used w/sleeve or 1 piece main bearings) On my late 52A i was unable to correct flywheel end play, until i found out that the sleeve bearing used these washers and they were not there (try to find that info in the A parts book!!!- found it in my 60 book, another case of having to read in between the lines of the parts book. Have fun gwh

JD60, if that piece is that small maybe you are talking about the spacer drive pin? It should be attached to the flywheel & stick out enough to engage a square slot in the spacer, if that is what it is you don't have a problem.
~While you are in there you should replace the spacer cork seal, to do that just remove the spacer cover & pull the spacer off, then dig the old cork seal out & soak a new one in oil & install in the spacer, then use a socket or other round object & run it around inside the spacer to seat the seal. When reassembling the spacer cover make sure you center it around the spacer with cardboard or feeler stock before tightening the bolts, then remove the centering meterial.
~The slot in the spacer MUST be turned to line up with the flywheel drive pin before the flywheel is installed.....
