I changed the oil in on our 40 yesterday and lo and behold the bottom washer was missing just like I've read on some posts here. I found the picture of the washer on jd40.com but since we don't have anything to cut a true circle 3" I found a different solution to the problem. If you get a washer for an 1 1/4" bolt and weld a 1/2" washer inside it you can then drill out the center to 1" and a couple of min. with a rat tail file and you have your washer for under $1 and 15 min. worth of time.

I lost one on my tractor somehow and ordered it from Deere. It wasn't too expensive. So I also ordered a spare. On both of these I used my engraving etcher and scribed a warning on both sides of the washer. Then I used a scotch brite disc on my die grinder to remove any burrs. The surface is smooth and the warning can be easily read. Both of my Ms have this warning now. The first M was owned by my father, and he would never have thrown the washer away with the used filter by mistake. He may have had help somewhere along the line during an oil change before I obtained the tractor. I didn't know about the washer until I read about it in the service manual. So when I pass these tractors to my sons, they'll have a little note from their Dad to forewarn them about the washer.

KB; Thanks for the suggestion. I usually need something like on a Sunday or other time when my dealer is closed! Now I have an choice. I can wait until Monday or simply build my own! It's great to learn about home remedies like this.
Thanks,Tugboat

I was going to make my own but it turns out my dealer had reproductions made and sells them for $5. Sure it's a little steap for a washer but they're precision machined, very high quality, and there was zero work or time on my part.
