Am I getting ripped off on a 2020?

Looks like I've gone ahead and done it. I've committed to purchasing a 1970-1 JD 2020 gas with a JD 147 loader. Tractor is a one owner with less than 2100 hours and appears to be in very good order. JD dealership is running it through the shop for a new exhaust system and general inspect/replace maintenance. Tractor does have power steering and posi-trac (maybe they all do). I'm happy and pleased with the tractor.

My concern is about the price. In looking through the past 2020 posts, I now feel that I'm getting ripped off because the dealership has me convinced that $8800 is the typical rate for a tractor/loader in this condition and low hours. Is this a fair price or should my forehead be tattooed with "sucker"? The dealership has treated me fairly on other JD issues & items in the past.

Also, any other concerns or items to watch for on a used 2020? Thanks in advance for your help and answers.

New JD guy in MN,

I think if you hold on to that 2020 for 20 years or so, you'll have "smart guy" tattooed on your forehead.

I've had a 1020 with a loader for nearly 25 years now. From what I've seen of pricing, you may be a tad high, but not much. Buying it from a dealer ups the price a bit. But on the other hand, they should stand behind it for a while, and they're fixing it up for you now. You'd probably spend a lot of time and effort to find a better deal... and just might end up with a worse deal.

I think the hours are straight. My 1020 doesn't have many more, and it's a '66 model. Used mostly for baling hay 2 or 3 times a year, and mucking out manure with the loader. It's never had a real problem, and they sell for about the same now in constant dollars as it cost 2nd hand years ago. A whole lot better than some stocks of late, and much better than most investments you can make in something on four wheels.

Whenever I think about replacing the 1020, I look at what they want for a new one with a loader and similar power. The number is about 3 times what you're paying. The "sucker" tattoo might be appropriate if you passed on the 2020 deal and went with a new one. Hang in there, years from now you should be well pleased with that 2020.

Steve

The price is NOT out of bounds. I have a '73 1020 Diesel with the 48 loader and the offers have been in the 10K range. My buyers are small horse/estate folks and their alternative is one of the JD Compacts (a lawn tractor on steroids).

You've got a great tractor that will do work and appreciate in value. Enjoy!

Also, the JD 3020 series is cheaper because of the supply of them is greater. Small estates and horse operations can't use this tractor as effectively as the JD 1020-2030 series because it is 3000 lbs heavier. I personally am looking to buy a 3020, but I make hay and do several other chores that fit this tractor's working profile.

We bought a 2020 gas new in early 1972 actually was a '71 model , the 2030's were out and we got a good deal on this hold over model . Has the reverser trans , heavy front axle ( straight ) and a 48 loader . It has 2900hrs on it now , it has never been hooked to a tillage tool just used for loading , mowing and other chores . Has been a good tractor , nothing has been worked on yet . Mechanically good physically looks like what its loaded mostly . It doesn't have enough power or hydraulics to really tear anything up , I think that's why it's been so trouble free . As far as price for the one you are talking about , it sounds a little hi especially for a gas . I'm not familiar with a 147 loader , I know the 48 , 146 and 148's don't know where the 147 fits in . There were 47 loaders on some 2020's I think but can't say for sure . As for the reverser it's great for loading and mowing but for field work it's not too hot , but for our use I wouldn't be without it . I've been kind of looking for a 2630 or 40 to replace the 2020 but haven't yet found one with a reverser .

i don't think your getting ripped considering i saw a 2020 with well over 4000 hours on it sell for 9000$ here in kansas i think they are just the perfect size tractor for the ground here in kansas and i imagine it is about the same in oklahoma.

I think you're paying a fair price - not a steal, but with only 2100 hrs on it you should have trouble-free use for some time. I have a 2020 diesel I bought at auction 2 yrs ago that after the work I put into it cost about the same as what you're paying. If it's as clean as you say it is I think you should be able to sleep well at night. Enjoy!

My father use to borrow a nearby Dairyman's 2020 diesel with a 148 loader to buck out manure from our pole barn a few days each year. That dairyman beat that tractor to death for over 25 years before trading it in on a 4050. He use to ram heavy wet manure at a high rate of speed just to ensure he got a full bucket. I can't see you ever getting hurt with a tractor that takes on that much abuse day in and day out. Feel good about your purchase and enjoy it.

I know it's hard to believe the actual hours are less than 2100, but this tractor was bought new by the local banker in 1971. The only use was to plant, cultivate and plow a 3-4 acre patch of sweet corn. Was used to move snow until 1985 when he retired and began spending his winters in Arizona.

2020 and 2030 tractors I've seen on sales bring
between $6500 and $7500,rougher ones sell
between $4500 and $5500.Don't know if I would
believe those hours, unless they can prove it,
That's only around 70 per year.If you can verify
the hours, and it's that sharp I would much rather
have it than one of those high hour cheaper ones.

Seems high to me, especially since i'm not a dubuque built tractor fan. I live in SW MN, don't see alot of 2020's lots of 2940's 2630's that size of utility. But I would think for $8800 you could get alot more tractor possibly a 3020 with a 158 or 148, unless the 2020 suites your needs more and its nice. Low hours and going through the shop good is worth something to.

That sounds a little high to me, but I don't know what the tractor market is like up there, and I'm not familiar with that model. I would think that you could get a good 3020 and loader for the same money or less, but probably not with only 2100 hours. The bottom line is that it's your money, so if you want the tractor and are happy with it, go for it. Just remember, the deal isn't final until they have your check, and you're free to back out at any time, regardless of your dealings with them in the past. You'll never be completely happy with a tractor that you think you might have gotten a bad deal on.
