I read some older posts by G Taylor in which it was recommended that the throwout bearing be greased in a Germain made John Deere 2120 which was probably originally sold in Canada. How do we grease the throwout bearing? We have a 2120 that we purchased about three years ago. It is an excellent tractor for us and we have tried to do all of the service but we haven't done that and want to. Some member(s) of our JD dealer svc dept still refer to it as "that tractor from Mexico" like it
s some pariah so it's just easier to learn things elsewhere sometime. I'd certainly appreciate any information on greasing the throwout bearing.
Another question - my JD (very good) parts department say that 2020 parts fit the 2120 and that has been true thus far. Is that always true?
Thanks for any information.

there are two about 3" plugs on the clutch housing one of them (the front one) plugs the access opening for bearing lubrication.
open it up (never with engine running!),and iluminate the inside (with a flahlight or other means) you will see the bearing and the grease zerk.you will need a long tube on your grease gun.pump only a few strokes of good hi-temp grease.

Thanks, david val. I will look for the zerk when I go out to the tractor. That should make it easy to find while I await the service manual.

Best advice is to obtain the parts and service manuals from JD at 1-800-522-7448. There is a picture that shows what cover to pop off and where the zerk fitting is hiding. To much grease is a bad as too little. The 2120 was the start of a fine line of four cylinder diesels from Mannhiem Germany that continued to the 55 series. Too bad Deere spoiled thier name in the utility tractor market with the 5000 and 5010 series turkeys.

Thanks G Taylor. I do need to order the service manual and the parts manual - I intended to and should have done that long ago but kept putting it off. I do have an owners manual for a 2120 (not for my vin, though). My JD place is really quite helpful now (except the one service guy whom I unfortunately ended up talking to most recently) about this tractor - though it seems quite an oddity to them. I appreciate the history on the model, too. Not knowing much about tractors, we just stumbled upon it and agreed to buy it. Certain JD people made a real stink about it's having been made in Germany ("gray market", "parts unavailable", "Mexican"?? "off brand", but since we had committed to buy it, I bought it anyway and am quite pleased that they were so wrong. It continues to be be a very good tractor for us.
I'll use the 1-800 number to order the manuals. Thanks.
