Thanks for all the suggestions to " Rich Running AR", I have gone through everything that you suggested, I have good spark, have set the float as recommended, and attached the clear plastic tube to a fitting on the bottom of the float bowl (the fuel level is very erratic, however after changing oil and filter I started over. The tractor starts at the first crank and then runs rich so I turn off the fuel supply above the sediment bowl and the engine starts to run smoothly, I presume that I am simulating the float by running this way as it is a very fine line between it running just good enough to idle witout flooding and yet too lean to apply a load (ie. engaging the clutch just to run the flywheel). Would this suggest a new needle valve and seat? I have taken it all apart and of course nothing obvious to the naked eye except that it may appear to have very tiny pit marks on the upper part of the seat. While I'm at it, the existing needle valve has a neoprene tip at the end, is that a good thing or is there any choice? Thanks in advice for a a long-winded question. Jake.... from Northern Alberta, Canada.

Jake, make sure the air cleaner isn't plugged. If that is ok make sure the carb bowl vent isn't plugged. If ok there make sure the main nozzle has the spring under it & the holes in the side of it are open.
~Does it have a cork float? ~The clear tube will only show a correct fuel level at low throttle settings & will be erratic at high throttle openings due to internal carb negative pressure...
