I am working on my pony ignition system. My wire going to the points gets red hot and smokes. Its the one from the condenser to the points. I have 5 volts going to the points. Whats going on? It happens as soon as you flip on the switch.

thanks

720x3, that's a good question.
~It sounds like you either have a wire with too much resistance or the coil has an internal short.
~Try swapping coils from side to side & see if the hot wire follows it, if so the coil probably has an internal shorted winding (try measuring the resistance of the good side & bad side & compare).
~If the problem stays with the side & not the coil suspect a bad wire or improper wire hook up (are you sure the coil is wired correctly & you don't have the power wire hooked directly to the points?)

IT HAD BEEN RUNNING FINE, SO I DON'T THINK IT WAS HOOKED UP WRONG. i'LL CHECK THE COIL RESISTANCE. HOW MANY VOLTS SHOULD BE AT THE POINTS?

THANKS

720X3, probably close to full battery volts [points open] & close to 0 volts [points closed]. ~You should have 4.5-5 volts at the coil power side after the ignition is on for a minute or so & the points on that coil are closed. With the points open on both coils, it should go to close to battery voltage again.
