The left steering clutch housing on my early (S/N 86890) 420C has a crack about midway between the two large "ears" on the front of the housing & extending inboard abt. 2 in. from the final drive mounting flange. I got another housing, but this turned out to be the later "four-bolt" design with one long ear with four holes in it, which looks like a heavier design. I think that maybe these two-bolt housings have been cracking so JD beefed them up in the later 420C's. It looks like it would bolt up, but to be safe, I got another housing of the same "two-bolt" style. This one turned out to have a crack just the same as the other one. I got the crack welded, but now my question is Were these housings prone to cracking? Has anyone else out there noted a crack in the left steering clutch housing on their early (S/N < 100,000, all green)420C or 40C? If these housings were prone to cracking, then I will install the heavier "4-bolt" one. Thanks for wading thru this long winded message and for any help.

Yes they were prone to cracking. The good news is that they are all interchangeable, if my 30 year ago memory is right. I am running the later 420 housings on my 40C. Also, the final drive housings were very prone to cracking and there are at least 3 o4 different versions of these. I have two different 420 housings on my 40 and I think that in my pile of spares there are two more different ones. Again, these will bolt on.

I thought so. Thanks for getting back to me. Since I do have the one heavier clutch housing, i will use it in place of the original design. I have heard about the final drive housings cracking, too, but so far, (knock on wood) mine seem OK. Thanks for the tips
