I have seen several tractors that idle VERY slowly and wanted to know what you need to do this? I would liek to be able to run them as slow as possible so you can hear the mag click ??Is this difficult....i am sure tractor has to be in perfect mechanical condition. Can i slwo the idle with mag adjustments or carb adjustments --thanks

520lover, when I first read your post I thought you were talking about a 520 but then you mentioned mag [the 520 did have a mag option but that is very rare].
~While there are some basic things that can help the idle go slower it kind of depends on the tractor. Let me know the tractor, the mag type & model you are trying to do this on so we can focus on that tractor.....

520lover, you shouldn't have to anything to the 520 if it is healthy. Those things will idle down to 250-300 RPM just the way they were built. You might have to richen the idle screws a little to get it down there though.
~Make sure the thermostat is working as a cold engine won't idle low without loading up.
~Change the oil in the air cleaner to 10W, set the timing to; retard = TDC & advanced = 20*, install hot spark plugs with 2 gaskets & open the gap to .040", make sure the dist advance is working [& returning], open the valve clearance to .022" hot, use 10W30 oil, set the oil pressure to 10-12PSI hot, make sure the carb throttle plates are in REAL good shape, centered in the bore & the shaft bushings are not worn at all, don't use premium gasoline or gasoline with alchahol in it, make sure the valve guides are tight & not allowing air/oil fumes to get sucked in past the intake valve stem during high vacuum low RPM conditions.
~One last thing, if you only want to do this once in a while & are trying for the lowest you can get, install a switch in the power feed wire to the coil that you can flip to by-pass the resistor as that will give you a real good fat spark [don't use his too much or at fast idle] as it will eventually burn the points, if only used at slow idle the generator isn't charging then so the non resisted voltage will be a little lower than at fast idle....

Clooney, got to admire how resorceful you can be. Did see someone with a 620 who ran real slow without the fan belt tightened. He had more weight on the flywheel too.

Clooney and 520 lover, I can set my 520 to consistently idle at 160 RPM. This was checked with a digital electronic tachometer. (I think I checked it once and it travelled 6 inches per second.) You want to be sure your oil pressure is good, then set the timing at straight up TDC. It won't pull worth a hoot at that setting but if you are going to enter a slow race this will get you started. Getting 200 RPM's is easy. After that, everything has to be "right". Hope this helps. Mike
