Should JD A rods w/babbitt bearings when properly shimmed and torqued have any noticeable side-to-side play on the journals?

Side to side play will not hurt anything. But you need to ensure that there isn't in forward to back play on the rods. Ensure that they are with in the specs that the repair manual states. If your not sure or comfortable with the installation of the cap, try using plasti-gauge. It's not the best, but it will give you an Idea of the clearance on the crankshaft journal. As has been said, you don't want them too tight, but you sure don't want them to loose either. You should be able to get them installed within the specs of the repair manual without too much headache.

Ford, should they [no], do they [yes]. ~That seems pretty common on the older 2-cylinder Deere's & doesn't seem to hurt anything. ~It would be nice to snug them up a little but that is awful hard to do..... ...

Ford, A good thing to do on installation of all connecting rods is to always snug rods up a little and tap the rod and cap to the cheek of the crank to make sure rod and cap aren't staggered. Loose fit on the rod bolt holes let the rod and cap move around. I hope this helps. The Deere manual has spec on side clearance.I Like to have it right.Too much clearance, then you have over lubrication on cyl walls. You can probably get by with 1,1/2 times spec. Not enough clearance is worse,on newly stroked cranks or on rods that have been rebabitted make sure you have ENOUGH rod side clearance to get proper oil throw off to lube cyl. walls.Result is piston scoring.
