I have a handstart '44 A. Never wanted to start real easy and if she was hot, she was hard to restart. Anyways, I was going go through the carb, thought maybe it needed professional help. Looking closly through the paint, I saw it was a DLTX-67 (great for a B, not as good for an A). Talked to my local JD junkyard and traded for an A carb (a DLTX-18, unbeknownst to me, still not right as it is for an unstyled A, but a closer fit). I hooked it up and found a crack in the fuel strainer lid. Again talked to the JD junkman and he sent me a different on to replace it. The original one was in great shape (except for the crack. The new one looks like it was lost in the chicken coop for a long time. How do you get the screen off without bending it all up?? (The original is perfect and the one on the replacement might as well not be there). Is there a clean way to fix the crack?? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks..... .

You can remove the screen but first you have to take a file and remove the crimp on the little brass center.Put the hex in drill chuck and take file and knock off crimp.Earl

Buster, my suggestion would be to purchase a new one from Robert's Carb, or somewhere. That way you would have a nice looking new part, and a new, clean screen. I usually put an in-line fuel filter in also as a little added protection against rust or any other trash from getting into the carb.
If you order a new fuel strainer lid from Robert it will be part# "R-10" and I think the cost is about $10.

I'm hoping to see how well this thing is going to work before I spend more on it. In the future, I may work on beautifing it (We all know that things put off till later don't usually happen, But I'm really going to try hard this time.... really, I mean it...)
