I have a 1944 A that I restored. I didn't put any oil the first reduction gear cover. Should there be any in there, and how much? What is the best way to get it in there? What is the purpose of the oil in there?

John, don't worry about it.
~The "A" first reduction cover gets it's oil from the engine [there is no crankshaft seal for the R/H main bearing & oil flows freely into the 1st reduction cover]. There is a drain at the bottom so excess oil can flow back into the crankcase.
~What is the purpose of the oil in there?..To oil the 1st reduction gears & PTO gear. The later [numbered]series are sealed to the crankcase & use gear oil from the transmission to lube that area..... ..
