JD 4010 Diesel Questions

Looking at a 1962 4010 Diesel for purchase and have a couple of questions. The tractor has not run much in recent months, but has been started and run in the past few days. When started, started right up, but noticed whitish-color smoke coming from the exhaust. This white smoke continued for several seconds, then faded to a bluish-white color and remained that way for several minutes, never really going away completely. Question #1: Should I be concerned about this color smoke? Question #2: What are the small holes in the left side of the engine block? They run horizontally across the lower half of the block. Question #3: What, if anything, should be seaping out of these holes? Oil? Water? Anti-freeze? This one has some oil seaping out. Normal? Are these things that should keep me from purchasing this tractor if all other things seem OK? Appreciate any help.

Can't believe someone hasn't answered these easy ???'s. The white turning to gray/blue smoke is probably from low compression not toally burning the fuel completely... caused by worn rings. The 6 weep holes go into the space between the O-rings around the sleeves between the lower o-rings sealing the crankcae and the upper o-rings sealing the water jacket. NOTHING should be leaking from them. If oil is leaking then the lower o-rings are leaking and if the upper o-rings on that cyl. should start to leak the anti-freeze would get into the oil. The engine COULD run for 1000 maybe 1500 more hours on light loads this way.... but a major rebuild is NOT too far off for that tractor. Dad bought a used '63 4010-D back in about 1969... had low hours.... original 15.5 rear tires with little wear... supposedly had the 4020 Kit in it.... Owner said it used a little oil..... Yep.. sure did.... about 5 QUARTS per tank of fuel pulling 4-14's. When cultivating and running on lighter loads it would drop to about 2 qts per tank of fuel... PLUS on a 4010-D on light loads a tank of fuel can last a REAL long time...ONE MORE THING - Those engines are real sensitive to injection pump timing. Make sure someone who KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING set the timing and maybe even have the pump rebuilt. Dad's 4010 went from pulling Our 12 ft disc in 4th or 5th gear and struggling to flying with it in 6th or 7th shooting a foot of flame out the exh. extension with JUST with 2-3 hrs of work on the inj. pump one night. Blew the head gasket fall plowing that fall... got a major rebuild that winter.... and had maybe 50 hrs on it when Dad sold it the next summer after cultivating.
