looking at a 1945 JD50 A with wide front.
and has two fuel tanks. 1 for gas starting!
What exactly today is considered distilate fuel?
What should be run in the Main tank?
Does it hurt to run them on Gas all the time? Can anybody post what a factory wide front looks like on this model A S/N 553582?

JJ,

Distilate is also called kerosene. I'd guess the guy who has it now is probably using gas. The compression ratio is lower on the all fuels / higher for the gas tractors. Doubtful you'll do much harm by running what was then the more expensive fuel.

I think you mean it's a model A, not a 50. There's a picture of a wide front A on this site, the link below should lead you to it.

Yes I meant A not 50 A.
Yep it is the same , except someone upgraded the seat to a newer style with black cushions.
Don't think that was on a 45 Model!
Nice old A it is! Good tires, been cut where the muffler is! Have not heard it run Yet.
but she has been taken care of from what I can see. cept they want $2500 for it.

JJ,

Your rear end will thank you for leaving that new seat with the black cushions on, should you decide to get it. You could always pick up the original seat and assembly in case the "correct police" come around.

Not easy to find one that hasn't been cut. I'm sure you're going to hear it run and try it a bit before you buy it. The $2500 may be a little steep in some parts of the country. It could be you're paying a bit of a premium for the wide front -- there aren't too many of those -- but they're good to have in hilly country. Even if you use all your negotiating skills and still only move the price down a little bit, you'll probably end up with a tractor that's going to hold its value very well over the years. Just take care of it like it has been. Good luck on getting a good machine if you decide to buy it.
