Gear noise in John Deere 520

I have tremendous gear noise in my 520. I put all new bearings in the right-hand side of the transmission, but still have the noise. Yes, it has had water in it. I notice when people sell 520's, they mention "quiet gears". Is it a trait of 520 John Deeres to have gear noise? Thanks in advance.

some years ago, restored a 50 B and checked the transmission gears carefully looked fine. Rebuilt transmission, and noise in 1/3. The gears looked fine, tore transmission down again and replaced these gears and noise stopped. Detecting wear that and cause noise if very difficult, Obviously if it a clunks, broke teeth, no problem. You might replace tear down, recheck. I try to replace all matching gears.

Cliff, I'm not sure the 520 is any worse than the other numbered series. I have owned a couple of 520's & one was quiet & the other was noisy in 5th & 6th gear.
~One thing that seems to exaggerate the noise is the higher engine RPM on the 520 [1325 rated & 1460 no load].
~The other thing on the 520 is the lack of a replaceable outer pulley bearing inner race so when the crankshaft wears, the pulley remains loose on the crank & causes a drive gear to 1st reduction gear contact change.
~What gears [or all] does your noise appear in? Is the noise on pull or coast, or both? ~You can sometimes tell [or at least get closer to the cause] by figuring out what is driving & what is not during noise production.
~Another thing I have noted on some 2-cylinder tractors that have noisy transmissions under pull & get better on coast is the tooth crown worn flat on the drive side of the drive & 1st reduction gears. [probably due to high hours on those tractors].
~With water found in the transmission you should probably go into the trans & look for pitted bearings & gear tooth pitting. You will also probably find the L/H sliding gear shaft bearing has been spinning in the case & is somewhat sloppy [all the wear & bearing wear lead to gear misalignment] so the contact pattern is different than the gears were worn in at & that contributes to trans noise. ~Gears that are loose on the sliding shaft due to wear lead to noise due to misalignment under load & contribute to gear noise as well.
~The addition of 140W GL-1 [not GL-5] will sometimes mute the noise slightly. It wont remove a noise from a noisy transmission but will in some cases remove the high frequency harsh sounds & leave a more pleasing [at least to me] muffled sound to the gear noise..

First of all, thanks: you have given me some good ideas. When I bought the tractor, the motor was froze up, so I didn't know about the gear noise till I had fixed the engine ($350 for two pistons). The noise is only when it's pulling, in every gear. I'll take the reduction cover back off and look again, although they looked good.

Thanks for the reply Walt... I already put $250 worth of bearings (a mere handful) in the right side. You can imagine my surprise when I heard the noise was still there. I've been bit before!

the noise is usually traced back to the first reduction gear (the first gear driven off the crankshaft gear). is the noise a steady wurrrrring? if so then check the outboard bearing on the outside of the reduction gear cover. take the bearing cover off and try to push the shaft toward the clutch and then back toward the axel to see if it has any play in it. a little play might be fixed with a new set of bearings (three sets not counting the left outboard or lpto idler gear) if the noise has a knocking or ocasional thump then go further in the transmission----- walt
