I have an 830 and the brakes don't work, so I'm trying to remove the brake drums to see if it needs new shoes (the brake pedals make contact when stepping on them but they are totally ineffective). After removing the nut on the shaft, I tried wedging large screwdrivers between the drum and back plate, but the drums won't budge. Can someone give me some ideas? thanks

Did you turn the adjusting screw so that the shoes weren't pressed against the drum? That will make things a little easier. On ours, the adjusting screw was stuck, but we still got the drum off, using Clooneys method.

With a really big hammer....

Yep, did that first as I thought also that it might help. Thanks for the suggestions. Haven't had time to work on it yet.

~David, reinstall the nut [only] & run it on just past the end of the threads, then swat the end of the shaft with a lead or brass hammer or use a brass drift & hit that with a steel hammer. CAUTION; don't hit the nut & don't hit the shaft directly with a steel hammer..... .
