'49 A carb questions

I’m confused and need some help again. My ’49 A had a DLTX 71 carb on it and I could never get it to run right. After cleaning the carb, (cleaned the passages with the Roberts Carb bits) to no avail, I gave up on it and bought another used one(also a ’71). The original had the stem broken off and had been brazed back on and I convinced myself that was the reason I couldn’t get it to run right.

I took the second one apart to clean it up, and noted that the float and main needle valve was different than the “original”. The float was bent differently to set the gas level in the bowl lower, and the needle valve was larger and in fact seemed slightly longer. I compared the needle valves and in fact the replacement one would not fit into the original valve body As it was larger in “diameter” (even though it is a triangle).

I used the replacement valve body, needle, and float and finished assembling the replacement carb after a complete cleaning. When I put it on the tractor I couldn’t get it to start, although it would pop once or twice. After a while of trying and playing with it I pulled the plugs and they were dry. I noted the pressure coming from the petcocks also seemed dry.

I assume my problem is I’m not getting gas to the engine. Con someone clue me into why the two different types of floats and needle valve assemblies? One of them all fuel? Which do I use? I thought I had the gas level adjusted set so it covered both needle valve openings in the bowl. Any other hints for me?

Thanks.

Marcus, with your mixing of the parts it is hard to tell what you have. ~The needle size difference is probably just due to different supply sources & the same with the float.
~As long as the needle fits the seat correctly & the float can open & close the needle, it should work ok.
~Set the float so the top is parallel with the bowl gasket surface & the fuel level should be good.
~Why it won't start could be many things & plugged passages & idle holes come to the top of the list. [make sure ALL the passages, idle transfer holes & bowl vent are open & the choke closes all the way]
