420 ignition problems

I have a 420 that started missing the other day while trimming some pasture. The next day it got worse. Then it shut off and I couldn't get it started again. I changed the plugs and that helped for a little bit then the same thing. After this round I switched the coil with one from a 420 crawler I have and that did nothing for it. So then I checked the points. Am getting a very weak spark there. In fact you can't really see any just hear it snap a little. So I put new points and a new condenser on. Tried it out. And the same thing. It's not near enough spark to start it. I got my test light out and I get a light on the (-) at the coil and also the (+) at the coil with the switch on. The light stays on all the time with the both of them. Shouldn't the one only light my tester as the points open and close? I also get a light where the wire that goes from (-) at the coil to the distributor attaches at the distributor. It stays on all the time as well. All of these lights dim to me. I put the light on the battery and it seems a little brighter. There shouldn't be any difference should there? Well, does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do next? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my M. I don't know if the distributor is the same but I replced my coil, condensor, points, rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs and wires. I helped alot and I havent had a problem sense. Just my two cents.

Dan, first, if the tractor is still positive ground the + side of the coil should be hooked to the distributor. [that probably isn't your problem but it will make it worse if it isn't correct]
~The test light should be lit all the time when placed on the ignition switch side of the coil & should flash on & off [when the engine is cranked] when placed on the distributor side [if it doesn't go off & on when the engine is cranked over, you have a problem at the points, point gap, wire between the distributor & coil, shorted condenser, or bad distributor ground] ~Can you see the points open & close when the engine is cranked over [if not find out why], if they open & close when cranked & the light stays on when placed on the distributor side of the coil place the test light on the points stud, then manually open & close the points to see if the light goes off & on. The light should be on with the points open & off with the points closed [if not find out why].
~If the light is off all the time suspect a short to ground at the points or points wire or a shorted condenser.
~You might want to try running a jumper wire from the ignition switch side of the coil to the battery stud on the starter. The ignition switch on the 420 is noted for failing & causing a low voltage to the coil [that jumper will prove or disprove that]..
