Just pulled the clutch cover on my newly acquired 37 B to find worn out splines on the crank. Well, as if I didn't already know, what are my options? Can they fix a crank like mine? What do you think a used one is gonna cost me?

Scott, I just wanted to verify something. You mentioned that you pulled the clutch cover, but nothing about the rest of the clutch. Are you sure the clutch driver is loose on the crank, or is the drive disk loose on the driver? Either way it can be repaired, but if the driver needs repaired or replaced, it will be much easier than if the crank does, as it will have to be removed. I've never been around that old of a B, so I'm saying this assuming that the clutch set-up is similar to the new tractors I've worked on.

G-MAN, Thanks for coming right back. I pulled the cover, noticed galling on the washer under the large main castle nut. Removed the nut and washer to find LOTS of slop in the splines between the driving disk and the crank. Looks like both parts are worn pretty bad.

Scott:

On an old "B" like yours, there are only two clutch facings...one on either side of the clutch driver that is on the crank. Newer models have four disks and a floater, then a driver hooked to the crank.

Sounds like you've found the problem....slop in either the internal splines of the driver or wear in the splines on the crank...or both. Drivers with wider splines are available for some models aftermarket, and this might allow you to get a new driver to draw down tight on the crank. Otherwise, you're going to have to pull the crank and weld up and machine new splines.

Thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate it. Gonna call Dengler Tractor about a wider spline disk.

I had this problem on a B. I was able to weld up the splines and remachine them right on the tractor. I used a high speed die grinder and carbide bits. I rigged the die grinder so that I could slide it along a rest to get accurate cuts. The clutch drive disk had to be replaced. The end result was an acceptable repair and a nice fitting drive disk.
