The clutch tightens while disengaged and loads up the engine when the wheel stops. We put in all different clutch plates as well as clutch facings to no avail. When you loosen up till it does not try to grab then it does not nuckle over.Could it be the dogs and toggles or the fork? Thanks

Jack, Did you replace or check the springs when you put in the new clutch parts? I found this to be my problem. Mine wasn't quite as bad as yours, but the clutch didn't want to disengage like it should.

Jack, give us a little more information. ~Does it do this just sitting there running? If so how long does it take?
~Does it only do it when you pull back farther on the clutch handle.
~If it does it all by itself is there a noise associated with the engagment?
~It might be as simple as a pulley brake adjustment. ~Was the clutch driver tight on the crankshaft when you had it apart to replace the clutch plates.
~Does the crankshaft have a lot of end play? If so how much?

I have not noticed any noise. The clutch drive disc has good splines as well as the crankshaft. As far as end play,we will have to check that this afternoon. There is a new clutch disc behind the drive disc. When it is idleing while the wheel is spinning everything is fine and when you knuckle the clutch out(disengage it)it is ok for a few seconds while the wheel is stopped then all the sudden you start to see smoke from the clutch area and the engine starts to bog down. When you loosen up the clutch enough to stop the bogging and smoking of the clutch discs then it won't knuckle in.When we get a decent snap it burns the clutches when you stop the wheel with the brake. Thanks

Jack, are you holding the lever back after it is disengaged? Or does it smoke & re-engagge on it's own WITHOUT you pulling the lever back farther?

Holding back the lever just enough to stop the wheel. Not hard enough to make it start to pull, just enough for the pulley brake to stop the wheel. But while your sitting there with the wheel stopped it does ok for a few seconds and then she starts to load the engine and goes to smokin.

Jack, try tightening the pulley brake so it stops the pulley sooner with no, or almost no pull on the lever to see if that helps.
~What is your S/N? there is a big clutch parts change between the early & late 60...
